Anambra Govt Distributes Free Improved Farm Inputs To Farmers In Nnewi Council Area
Over three hundred thousand naira worth of improved vitamin “C” cassava stems have be disbursed to farmers in Nnewi South Council Area at no cost.
Also provided for farmers in the council area are bags of MPK fertilizers at a very subsidized rate.
The farmers in Nnewi South Council Area, who gathered at the council headquarters in Ukpor,were thrown into jubilation as a lorry loaded with improved vitamin “C” cassava stems and subsidized MPK fertilizer arrived the council.
Addressing the farmers , the Commissioner for Agriculture, Mechanization, Processing and Export, Mr. Afam Mbanefo, said the gesture is in fulfillment of Governor Willie Obiano’s promise of assisting farmers with improved farm inputs aimed at fighting hunger and poverty in line with the Sustainable Development Goals Initiative.
Commissioner Mbanefo, represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Comrade Leo Imoka, instructed the farmers to plant the stems within seven days for optimum yield.
The Agricultural Development Programme Manager, Mr. Jude Nwankor, who said the cassava stems are highly medicinal and can resist any cassava disease, assured farmers of the treatment of their acidic lands with lime to assume fertile status
The Transition Committee Chairman of the Council Area, Engineer Felix Odumegwu, who spoke through the Council Supervision for Agriculture, Chief Pius Okafor, described the exercise as strengthening mechanized farming with best agronomic practices and enjoined famers to embrace it and work towards branding their own farm produce.
Responding , the Head of Department of Agriculture in the coutncil, Mrs Mercy Olisa, who charged farmers to make judicious use of the inputs and contribute to the state’s vision of achieving food sufficiency, announced the farmers determination to reciprocate the gestured by casting their massive votes for Governor Willie on November eighteenth.
In their separate speeches, some of the farmers, Mr. Benedeth Ofomah from Uhuori Ukpor and Mr. Innocent Okonkwo from Akwaihedi assured on its multiplication within the council area and beyond and charged his fellow farmers to cast their votes for Governor Obiano who, according to him, is the only Governor in the history of the state that remembered farmers.
