Japanese,27, butchers 9 persons, freezes parts

Japanese police have found nine mutilated bodies dumped in containers with their heads cut off and flesh stripped in a suburban Tokyo flat, media reported Tuesday. Tokyo police have arrested 27-year-old Takahiro Shiraishi who reportedly confessed to slicing the flesh off the bodies and throwing it in the trash, then sprinkling cat litter over the remains in an effort to cover up the evidence. Woman bags 10 years imprisonment for cocaine trafficking

By Umeofor Chiazaram A Federal High Court in Lagos, on Tuesday convicted and sentenced a 56 years old woman, Modinat Owolabi to 10 years imprisonment for cocaine trafficking. Justice Mohammed Aikawa sentenced the convict after she pleaded guilty to a one-count charge of drug trafficking preferred against her by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). The convict had earlier pleaded guilty when she was first arraigned before the court, and had maintained her plea when the matter came up on Tuesday. After reviewing the facts of the case, the prosecutor, Mr Abu Ibrahim, tendered the convict’s harmonised ECOWAS passport, an E-ticket and a boarding pass obtained from her as evidence. He also tendered three written statements of the convict, two request of scientific aid forms, a drug analysis report, and a sealed brown envelope which were all admitted as exhibits. Flanked by principal officers of UNILAG, Prof Bello, who will leave office on November 11, told the gathering that he is not interested in the 2019 Ogun State gubernatorial contest and even distanced himself from politics. Government considers non-custodial sentencing to address prison congestion

The Federal Government says plans are under way to commence the implementation of non-custodial sentencing as a means of addressing the challenges of prison congestion. The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr Abubakar Malami (SAN), announced this on Monday in Abuja, during the inauguration of a stakeholders’ committee to oversee the implementation of directives to expedite prison decongestion. He decried the deplorable conditions in which most prisoners were held, adding that the state of Nigerian prisons was a direct violation of the rights of the inmates. He said it was part of efforts to address the situation that the Federal Government had evolved programmes aimed at aiding decongestion of prisons across the country. “It is for this reason that my office intends to come up with a road map and comprehensive action plan to ensure that permanent gains are achieved in the work on reformation and decongestion of our correctional institutions,” he said...

47 years after Biafra civil war, Nigerian govt agrees to pay victims N88 billion

About 47 years after the Nigeria civil war ended on ‘No victor, no vanquish’ terms, the federal government on Monday agreed to pay victims of the war N88 billion compensation for their losses. A breakdown of the compensation adopted by the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice as consent judgment for government and the victims showed that N50 billion will go direct to the victims of the war in eleven affected states in the South-east, South-south and part of North-central regions, while the remaining N38 billion will go for the evacuation of abandoned bombs and other lethal weapons and construction of schools, courts, churches and mosques among others in the affected areas. 30 escapes death in Ebonyi auto crash

No fewer than 30 persons yesterday escaped death in an accident that occurred at the boundary between Enugu and Ebonyi state expressway. An eyewitness who spoke to journalists on the condition of anonymity, said the accident occurred when the driver of an 18-seater bus travelling from Abakaliki to Enugu tried to avoid a police checkpoint and collided with another Hiace bus returning from Enugu. Another eyewitness, Rev. Fr Stephen Nnorom of the Catholic Diocese of Buya Cameroon who was among those that rescued the victims and conveyed them to hospitals, described the accident as tragic and regretted the attitude of some sympathizers who could not volunteer their vehicles to evacuate the victims to hospitals. He advised motorists to always obey law enforcement agencies at the road to avert road accidents. Suspected cultists hack Ekiti State University student to death

An undergraduate of the Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado Ekiti, Ayodele Temilade, has been hacked to death by people suspected to be cultists. Some students of the institution, who confided in our reporter, said the corpse of the deceased was discovered at the gate of the school around 10pm on Sunday. They, however, explained that they did not know how the corpse got there. A close look at the corpse posted on the social media revealed that the head of the victim was severed and the body inflicted with several machete cuts. Confirming the incident, the PPRO in Ekiti police command, Mr. Alberto Adeyemi, said the command received the report of the incident on Monday morning and had since taken corpse to the mortuary.
